Om bloggen/About the Blog

I aim to use this blog to keep up my English and maybe give others some insights in Swedish language. It's not a diary - well not quite...

En kopparorm - Anguis fragilis - is a 'blindworm', 'slowworm' in my dictionary. Koppar is 'copper' and that must be because of the colour. Orm is 'snake', though it is related to 'worm'. So we Swedes think this is a snake, and the English think it's a worm, but it's neither - it's a lizard without legs; and Swedish zoologists have renamed it kopparödla - 'copper lizard'.

The Romans also thought it was a snake, because that is what Anguis means; and fragilis it is, because when this animal is in a tight spot it will sacrifice its tail to get away.
