Spindelväv is ‘cobweb’, ‘spider’s web’,. Spindel and English spider are both created from the verb spinna, to spin thread, a common Germanic word going back to the Indoeuropean root *(s)pen, ‘stretch’. Related words are Swedish spänna, ‘stretch’ and English span. Väv is ‘web’ or ‘weave’, from the verb väva. weave, back via Germanic *webanan to an Indoeuropean root *webh. Imagine all the hard work with spindles and looms during many thousand years.
