Jordgubbsplockning is ‘strawberry picking’. Jordgubbe – fragaria ananassa - is ‘cultivated strawberry’. Jord is same word as ‘earth’, and gubbe means ‘old man, and also ‘lump’, cf dynamitgubbe – ‘dynamite cartridge’. The old, dialectal word for for ‘wild strawberries’, jordbär has been supplanted in standard Swedish by smultron. Jordbär goes back to Old Germanic, as also for example German Erdbeere. English strawberries are of uncertain origin.
Fragaria comes from fragum, the old Latin word for ‘wild strawberry’. Ananassa means ‘similar to pineapple’.
Plocka means ‘to pick’; the English version is pluck. It is said to be a Germanic word that could be a loan from Vulgar Latin *piluccare – ‘to pluck (a fowl), derived from pilus – ‘hair’. (* before a word means that it is not documented; it is a reconstruction).
