GräslökAllium schoenoprasum – is ’chives’. Gräs is ‘grass’, (cf. ogräs), and lök is ‘onion’ and ‘bulb’. All members of the Allium genus are lök in Swedish, e.g. purjolök, - ‘leek’, vitlök – garlic, schalottenlök – shallot.

Latin Allium started as Sanskrit aluh, alukam – ‘bulb’, ‘edible root’ and passed many places and forms before it showed up in Greek with Plautus (dead 184 BC), as alium, ‘garlic’. Schoenoprasum comes from Greek schoeno- - ‘rush’ and praton – ‘onion’ (Jens Corneliuson, Växternas namn).
