Domherre

Domherre - Pyrrhula pyrrhula - Bullfinch - is the Swedish Christmas card bird. A bullfinch on a spruce twig is the Northern equivalent to a robin on a holly bush.

The word is old, originally, now outdated, it meant canon, a cleric associated with a cathedral, easily understood because of the bright red breast, similar in colour to the dress of the canons.

dom = cathedral (from Latin via German)

herre = approx. gentleman (also from German)

The female is not so bright, but she is still called a domherre, though I have heard domfru:
